Over recent years, careers in artificial intelligence have exploded as the digital landscape has changed to meet new technologies and new trends. As such, the number of jobs in AI-related posts has increased ten-fold. But at the same time, the number of people with the required skills to fill those posts has not seen the same sort of increase, leading to significant shortages of talent with the necessary skills. This shortage, as well as the variety of different types of roles available within the AI industry, has made getting a career in artificial intelligence an enticing prospect.

But knowing how to get into the industry is important.

What Education Qualifications do I Need for a Career in Artificial Intelligence?

For most artificial intelligence posts, the first thing you are going to need is a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or some form of computer technology. Unfortunately, a bachelor’s degrees are likely to only get you an entry-level or generic IT position at a tech company. To specifically get into the AI field you’ll need to get involved in courses that cover things like Bayesian networking (including neural nets), mathematics, computer science, cognitive science theory, physics, and maybe even robotics.

What Type of Roles Are There in the AI Industry?

If you’ve decided that a career in artificial intelligence is for you, then there are a number of different roles you could take up:

Machine Learning Tech Career

These mainly fall under the role of Machine Learning Engineers, which is a highly sought-after position within the AI industry and can command a high yearly salary. A Machine Learning Engineer is mainly responsible for building AI constructs for machine learning projects and then maintaining them. It is a key role in the AI industry and is suitable for anyone who specializes in data science or applied research. It does, however, also require the ability to code in a variety of programming languages. Read about Machine Learning education paths »

Business Career in Artificial Intelligence

A career in artificial intelligence doesn’t have to be a coding job. There are also positions available in the business side of the industry. These roles are normally labeled as business intelligence developers. All these roles require great analytical and mathematical skills and a thorough knowledge of programming in a variety of different languages. Read about AI Tech Career education paths »

The Final Word…

The AI industry is exploding, which is great for anyone with a passing interest in the field. We hope that we’ve whetted your appetite with this brief guide and inspired you to find a career or to develop new skills in artificial intelligence.
